Brian Clifford

Mr. Clifford is a self-taught artist in the truest sense of the word. From a very early age starting in elementary school at a catholic school in New Jersey, he realized his affinity for drawing. Drawing actually became a career for him through various opportunities in architecture and design where he would execute perspective renderings in pencil. Painting would come later, which is why one can see in his work a subtle use of color rather than a bold, deliberate approach. "Being self-taught, color intimidated me. It wasn't until I had many years in the color printing business that I felt comfortable with my understanding of subject." In fact, it was Harry Lehrner of Triton Press who recognized Brian's eye for art in the context of fine art printing. During a visit, Mr. Lehrner suggested to the then young artist that he had an excellent eye and would be very good at precision color correction in the business of fine art reproduction.

He is also a purist when it comes to his art. His works are rarely planned, they just seem to happen. He describes a feeling that washes over him at a given place and time that will stay until he works through it by expressing it on paper. He never uses a camera or any form of photography when doing fine art. A firm grasp on drawing is his foundation.

Most active in the mid-seventies at exhibiting, his participation in juried shows include:

Allied Artists of America
American Watercolor Society
National Arts Club
American Artist Magazine
Various local shows in New Jersey, Maine and Nova Scotia where he has won several awards including "Best of Show".

More recently his work can be seen at various shows in southern Colorado where he now resides.
